We all know that daily application of sunscreen is essential to protect the skin against the sun and other environmental aggressors. We also know that sun protection helps reduce the symptoms of environmental aging. But now a recent study out of Australia finds additional scientific support for the observation that daily application of sunscreen can also slow down the aging process.
Australian researchers analyzed the skin of more than 900 people under the age of 56. Those who were told to wear sunscreen every day for four years had a 24% reduction in skin aging compared to those who applied sunscreen at their own discretion. Broad-spectrum sunscreen helps stop the breakdown of collagen in the skin. By preserving this essential structural component of the skin, youthful firmness, tone and texture are preserved.
The study also found that not only does sunscreen reduce the effects of aging, but it also plays an important role in preventing cancer – a message that does not seem to be readily accepted by sun worshippers and indoor tanning enthusiasts.
When applying sunscreen, make sure to follow these tips for optimal sun protection and anti-aging benefits:
- Apply sunscreen liberally to all areas of the body so that it forms a film when initially applied
- Apply sunscreen at least a half hour before going into the sun
- Sunscreen should be the last product applied to the body and the face
- Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours when out in the sun and after swimming, sweating or towel drying
- Apply sunscreen every day, even if you don’t anticipate being outside
- Find a sunscreen that not only offers broad-spectrum SPF protection, but also has a blend of antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and hydrators for optimal anti-aging benefits
